La jolla indian reservation (Tribes 4 Christ)
Tribes 4 Christ is an organization founded by Susan Curo, one of the tribal leaders residing within the reservation to help those in need within the La Jolla community. Noticing families and community members struggling financially due to gambling and drug addiction that was influenced by nearby casinos, Susan dedicates her work towards assisting these members through food drives and community development projects.
Student volunteers take trips to the reservation located in Pauma Valley, CA to work on improving the quality of life for those within the reservation. Some community development projects involve clearing debris for safer road travel, community park renovation, community garden and market project, etc. Furthermore, volunteers raise funds throughout the year to continuously improve and grow the reservation, contributing to funding projects such as the community garden, providing necessary materials such as apple trees, rubber hoses for sprinkler systems, tarps for sun sensitive plants, fences for animal intervention, etc.
la jolla community garden project
Background: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the services aimed to help tribal members struggling financially due to gambling and drug addiction were shut down (e.g. clothes & food drives, educational services). Therefore, during the summer 2022, members of Orange Tech Pros started a community garden project aimed to establish a sustainable way for members of La Jolla Indian Reservation to have access to food and produce.
Objective: Establish a sustainable way for members of the La Jolla Indian Reservation community to have access to food and produce.
Approach: Establish an online market and distribution system for customers outside the reservation to purchase produce from the La Jolla community garden.
